Meta Description Tags and Social Media posts

So it is January and if you are wondering where do I start, there is one thing to remember when the migration is humming along and almost done. The meta description tags….are they important? Can they be blank? What happens if you do not fill them in?

As you dream of customers stampeding to you with MC/Visa held in outstretched arms, remember you have to attract them with descent links. So you know that you like posting cute things on facebook and you hope that the hashtags you use are getting looked at, but do you ever post a page from your website on your blog or facebook or twitter?

IF that page needs to increase in rank, it needs to be shared. That can happen if you create a facebook post about it or the content on it, then putting the link to that page in the post. And hold on a second, will that link display nicely? It depends.

I’ve worked on Bikini websites where the facebook admin wants to post cool pictures and articles, but forgets to post the bikini page on the website so customers can actually get to the product and buy it. That’s the point right? Well, if you don’t post the link to that page then you’re kind of missing the point of social media. Think about it. Who else might want to buy that bikini? Yup, that’s right, someone else. So sharing would work in that instance.

Plus, for non-ecommerce websites, if you don’t put a meta description tag on that page….when you post the link on that page it will populate with nothing in the graphic that should be the description of the page or product. Is that good? No!!! What’s the answer? Do your meta description tags!!

See how the description displays after the page title? Nice.

Out web developer said we could put those in later. But we have to put those in before we do social media posts right? Otherwise nothing will display. That would look bad…

There isn’t much room for important information on the tag right? The most important things have to come first. Our old e-commerce guy used to put part numbers at the end, but they would probably be better in the beginning on the left. Or is that in the URL. I get confused….
